//Who do you say that I am?

“Who do you say that I am?” — Jesus

Tucker Brown, MDiv
Mark 8

Secular people tend to think he’s a great guy who made the world a better place, but he’s not God.

Religious people often think he’s God so he’s there to meet our expectations.

Jesus takes a very different angle from the other two perspectives. See Mark 8:34-36

Tucker Brown, MDiv is good friends with our pastor Jon Hand. Tucker and Jon met in theological school and were known for secretly watching funny internet videos on their laptops on nights when the prof was a little boring. The professor always liked Jon and Tucker because they would always laugh hilariously when he cracked jokes….little did he know :)

Digging Deeper:

Book: Prayer: Does it Make Any Difference–Philip Yancey.  Yancey exposes some of the myths about prayer.  Prayer is often shrouded in obligation or guilt for not doing it enough. Or, prayer is used as a means to earn God’s favor so He does what we want Him to do for us.   Prayer is religious hocus pocus to get well meaning people to feel better about their lives. Prayer is a cosmic vibe we send people that really has nothing to do with a personal God.  These are just a few of the myths about prayer that Yancey tackles with a straightforward  thoughtful response.

Question: If you were to ask God one question, what would it be?

Challenge: So prayer seems too hard or boring? Or you don’t buy this Jesus thing. Try this. Pray for 10 minutes a day for two weeks. Read the Gospel of John- one chapter a day for two weeks, journal your thought and ideas. Ask questions of God, ask questions of people who  follow Jesus. You cannot know God without relationally opening yourself up to Him. If you push through the boredom, if you seek out answers when you don’t feel like it, if you seek to experience God in your daily life, I am betting that you will not be disappointed. Try it. Let me (Jon Hand) know if it doesn’t change you for the better in some way.

Podcast Listen to Sermon: Judgment

Podcast Listen to Music: Justice and Love by Stephen Santos

It seems capricious that God would judge all of us and some go to hell unless we believe that God is both 1. Good and 2. Relational.

Can you trust the goodness of God’s ability to judge others? Can you give up trying to judge others and leave that to a good God?

C. S. Lewis said, “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’ ” Lewis continues, “The doors to hell are locked from the inside.” Problem of Pain page 126. Lewis is saying that God gives us freedom to go in the direction we want to go…he does not force us to spend forever with him. He gives us space to live far away if that is what we choose.

How do you feel about a God who judges people for what they have done or not done?

How do you feel about a God who forgives those who want forgiveness?

What difference does this understanding of God make in your life?
